PA Dutch Secrets

I’m in quite the mood today and in order to cheer myself up, I am going to test some snickerdoodle recipes tonight. Which begged the question, where does the name “snickerdoodle” come from? No one really seems to know, though it had been suggested that it originated in New England or from those wacky Pennsylvania Dutchmen. Being that I am a PA Dutch lady, I would like to believe the latter.

I then looked up whoopie pies, another favorite of mine that I plan to perfect. Again, it said although the origin is unclear, food historians believe it is of Pennsylvania Dutch origin. And here I thought I hated PA Dutch food. I need to rethink my position.

I will share the results of my snickerdoodle testing tomorrow — I’m really only trying at this point to figure out the role of the shortening in the recipe — is it essential? (I’m a butter girl, though sometimes you just need the shortening) We shall see. In the meantime, check out this killer website: It’s a food timeline.
