I’m ridiculous, I know. This was from the day at the Astoria Beer Gardens, which was filled with brats ‘n beer. Thought this would be a good Friday post, just looking forward to the weekend and am thankful that I’m not this guy. I didn’t realize that they publicly executed the Chinese dude in charge of food safety. I’m sure the same fate is in store for the guy in charge of the lethal baby formulas. Yikes.

I was just thinking about The Go-Nuts, the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Super Hero Snak Rock&Gorilla Revue,” and wondered if me and Mikey were the only 2 people who listened to them? I think that more bands should sing about snacking and food in general. Let’s see if I can come up with a Food Playlist:
Ice Cream, Sarah McLachlan
Nutrition, Dead Milkmen
Cinnamon Girl, Neil Young
I Want Candy, Bow Wow Wow
Sugar Sugar, the Archies
Cherry Pie, Warrent
This is tough, help me out. Isn’t there some song about a Candy Shop and licking things? Why aren’t there more songs about hotdogs?
My site is under a bit of construction at the moment, please excuse the mess while me & mostly Neddy clean it up. Also, I did something I never do — I altered previously published content. Someone thought I was a little mean and certainly that wasn’t my intent, so I changed it. I’m a softy, what can I say? The last thing is my header photo…Ned & I seem to have some creative differences about it. I think I look like a douchette in every photo, maybe I should just stick to pictures of hotdogs.
Hello all, sorry for being so negligent in writing. Well, I have finished with the FCI and am baking full time at Balducci’s. In fact, I’m the only baker there, yikes!
Since my last entry, two of my plants have departed. Two words: Spider mites. Gross, they entirely covered my ivy with their disgusting little webs. I broke a cardinal rule in hosting house plants: I didn’t quarantine a new plant and because of that, I lost an old favorite that was setting near the host plant. The moral of the story is always keep new plants away from your old ones for a few weeks so you can be sure they aren’t hosting some sort of pest. Here is and interesting article about spider mites (albiet creepy) from Ohio State.

I love houseplants; I think they add so much life and character to a room. It is important to know what type of plant will be best suited to your home. You should be aware of how much sunlight your room is getting; for example, north facing windows get no direct sunlight, windows facing east get direct sunlight the first half of the day, while west-facing windows get sunlight during the second half. Southern exposures get the most direct sunlight.
Since many New York City apartments have few or no windows or are in the shadow of another building, it is important to get houseplants that require little sunlight. Here are some plants that do well in low light:
The lucky bamboo is simple to take care of and needs little to no light. They also need no soil to thrive, simply place in water or add rocks for decoration and structure. Water about twice a week, or when water gets low.
Ivy is a lovely plant on its own, but it can also be shaped around wires to give it a new and interesting appearance. They need water once or twice a week.
Zebra plants should keep their beautiful yellow flower all year round. I water mine about 3 times a week.
Hostas do well indoors as well as shaded outdoor areas. If you live in a wooded area, you should be aware that deer love to eat hosta. They need water about twice a week.
You should always buy your plants at a reputable plant store and if you are not sure what kind of light a plant requires, ask! It is tempting to buy the prettiest plant in the store, but if your house or apartment does not have the ideal conditions, it will quickly die. Avoid a headache and buy a plant that will thrive in its new home.
The summer season brings a chance to gather outdoors and at the center of that gathering should be a lot of animal parts roasting atop a grill. I’m beginning to understand the the art/sciene of grilling. God bless the food channel for devoting so much time to helping people like me better understand how to do grilling right. Alton Brown is probably my favorite authority on the subject. He goes deeply into the science behind what makes something tender and flavorful. I’m so inspired, I am looking into butchering classes.
Here’s a few tips for you to try at your next barbeque event:
Add a bit of wood to your grill/smoker for a different flavor. Try hickory, maple, or applewood. You could even soak a slab of wood, making sure it is fully saturated so it doesn’t burn, put it on top of your grill and cook your food on the wooden slab.
When cooking ribs, try a dry rub on your meat before you start cooking, then put a wet rub on towards the very end.
Try stuffing your hamburger with cheese or other fillings to make a truly unique burger!
I just love throwing a good party. Nothing makes me happier to see my friends enjoying the food I made and getting drunk on the drinks I stirred up. Although the task of preparing these treats may seem daunting, I hope I can give just a few tips on how to pull it off successfully. And remember, it’s not a party until someone breaks something.
I just got back from LA. That’s a pretty lame town if you ask me. But, the weather was nice and it was good to see all my old friends there.
I went to Spaceland on Monday night and saw Juliette Lewis’ band The Licks. Dear God, it was horrifying and hilarious. Ms. Lewis was staggering around and headbanging like a retard, dressed in a police outfit. In between songs she said things like, “this is for you guys that watch too much porn” and “I am the unloved I am the unwanted.” Give me a break. Puke. However, Linda Perry and Johnny Rotten (yikes!) were both present at the train-wreck of a performance. She doesn’t have a bad voice, but it the lyrics were so cheesey and the music so blah.
Sunday night was the Grammys. Big whoop. It seemed that all the afterparties were at fast food restaurants. I saw Steven Tyler at In & Out burger, stepping into his limo & there were some other rockers in the joint chowing on the legendarily delicious burgers. Steven eats his animal-style. There was also a party going on at Astro burger just down the street. Good times.
Tomorrow I’m off to Boston & New Hampshire, so I’ll be updating you kids later. Don’t forget to go to Sin-e on Friday night to see Asobi Seksu.
